SouthGobi Resources announces appointment of coal and energy industry veteran Mr. Kenneth Ross Tromans as an Executive Director

HONG KONG – SouthGobi Resources Ltd. (TSX: SGQ, HK: 1878) (“the Company”) today announces the appointment of coal and energy industry veteran Mr. Kenneth Ross Tromans, President and Chief Executive Officer, to the Board of the Company, effective November 8, 2012 (Hong Kong time).

Mr. Tromans, 56, has approximately 30 years sales and marketing experience in the coal and energy sector covering the Asian and North American markets. Most recently, he was General Manager Marketing at Rio Tinto Coal Australia where he was responsible for the development and implementation of the overall marketing strategy for thermal, coking and semi-soft coal. Previously, Mr. Tromans held senior roles at Rio Tinto including General Manager Marketing and Sales at Rio Tinto Alcan, Director New Markets and Service at Kennecott Energy and General Manager Marketing at Kaltim Prima Coal. He is a graduate of the University of New South Wales with a degree in Commerce, Accounting and Finance Management.

Mr. Tromans has not held any directorships in the last three years in any public companies. He has been appointed as President and CEO for an initial period of two years and as an Executive Director for an initial period of one year. Mr. Tromans is an employee of Rio Tinto Services Limited, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Plc, the ultimate controlling shareholder of the Company. Under the contract between Mr. Tromans and Rio Tinto Services Limited, the maximum amount of Mr. Tromans’ emoluments is USD1,307,000 per annum, in which USD470,000 is the base salary, USD391,000 is superannuation, insurance coverage and other kinds of allowances, and USD446,000 is the maximum incentive payment calculated based on a certain percentage of the base salary. He holds 23,057 shares, and 7,235 options, of Rio Tinto Plc, an associated corporation of the Company within the meaning of Part XV of the Securities and Futures Ordinance.
